Chicagoland's Only Aviation Museum
Special Museum Programs for Schools
Air Classics First Educational Presentation with the Butch O'Hare story and
an illustration of the basic elements of flight with the Guiness World Record
paper airplane
The Presentation consists of the following elements:
- A 20 minute video
featuring the retrieval of 12 World War II fighter aircraft from the bottom
of Lake Michigan after 48 years under water. The video details the
renovation and installation of one of those aircraft (the same model of the
plane flown by Butch O'Hare on his medal of honor flight during WW-II) into
O'Hare International Airport Terminal 2. Air Classics in partnership with
McDonalds Restaurants, the City of Chicago, and the US Navy has been
conducting this important project to memorialize an important Chicagoan and
highlight his contribution to history.
- The presentation will continue with a presentation of items worn by
aviators of that period and models of the Butch O'Hare project and the
aircraft carrier Lexington.
- A presentation on the basics
of flight including the following topics and interactive activity
applying the basics to paper aircraft.
- Why Do Airplanes Fly?
- Gravity vs. Lift
- Drag vs. Thrust
- Elevators and Rudders
- Secrets of a Perfect Flight
The presentation is a great way to introduce flight along with a connection to
little Chicago history. Combining the lecture with a museum tour allows students
to touch and feel. The basics of flight can be demonstrated with the aircraft
simulator where students can see for themselves the effects of control movements
in aircraft motion.
